Former Bond star Pierce Brosnan returns to Pinewood Studios to start a 10
week shoot on a film adaptation of the musical “Mamma Mia”. The film
features Meryl Streep, Julie Walters and Colin Firth and will be shot in the
recently rebuilt 007 Stage at Pinewood before moving to Greece for
a further 5 weeks.
“Mamma Mia” is a play telling the story of a bride-to-be trying to find
her real father, told using Abba songs. Brosnan plays Sam, one of three men
summoned to a Greek isle by a young woman who believes one of them is
her father.
For Brosnan, the opportunity to belt out such ABBA standards as “S.O.S.,”
which will be a duet with Streep, was irresistible.
“I said yes right away because it meant working with Meryl Streep,”
Brosnan told Daily Variety. “Secondly, I saw the show with my family in
London, and found it just so wonderfully happy and joyful..what a kick
in the pants, to be able to go off and spend time with Meryl on some
Greek island, singing ABBA songs.”
The new James Bond stage is now in use at Pinewood after the previous
building was damaged by fire in July 2006. Modern design has allowed
film crews to use more interior space while retaining the same dimensions
as the previous stage, which was built in 1976 for the Bond movie
“The Spy Who Loved Me”.
